The opening to book 2 is, um... Not exactly the most cheerful piece of fiction I've ever written. It quite literally opens with a suicide attempt. It does make a great contrast for later in the book, though.

My poor boy is deeply codependent and has had one (1) model for healthy intimacy, but because he recently realized that even the people he loves most are fallible, he doesn't really believe it's possible for love to exist outside of a consumptive context.

There's some definite inspiration in this scene from Don't Let the Forest In, so if you like this, I highly recommend you read that book.

The overarching antagonist of the series also gets his ideology from one of the major factions that fought in the war which led up to the second cataclysm. Which is partially why he loathes the Dark so much. Which is why he wants Harthin and everyone like him dead.

It's hard to say for sure because there are several, but I'd probably have to say the second cataclysm. It altered the shape of the planet down to its tectonic plates and nearly eradicated all life. It could have been prevented, probably, if not for imperialism and religious wars.
