Andrew leaves behind a rich legacy both in terms of his archaeological work and in the generation of students and postgraduates whose work he inspired. 5/5

Moreover, Andrew placed great emphasis on the full and prompt publication of his work. His major volumes the excavations at Nicopolis and Dichin were pioneering in the late antique Balkans for their emphasis on artefactual, faunal and archaeobotanical remains, alongside the structural evidence. 4/

Excavation at the late Roman city was accompanied by field survey & subsequent projects at the fort of Dichin & the hilltop of Dobri Dyal. The scale of Andrew’s excavation seasons is perhaps unsurpassed by any UK overseas project & a generation of students gained experience through the project. 3/

His ground-breaking fieldwork at and around the site of Nicopolis ad Istrum in Bulgaria was vital in the emerging study of the late antique city as well as being one of the first major British research projects carried out in Eastern Europe. 2/

The Department of Classics and Archaeology is sad to announce the recent death of our colleague, emeritus Professor Andrew Poulter.

Andrew’s pioneering work in the archaeology of the late antique Balkans played a major role in shaping late antique archaeology as a disciplinary area. 1/
