I do enjoy when I get to extrapolate work knowledge and apply it to every day life situations. Anything from diagnosing an issue at home, to ensuring a family member tosses their compromised treat because of awful recrystallization.

it was probably OK from a (nasty) microorganism POV. But that the texture, flavor, and quality of the ice cream had been damaged as it would recystallize very slowly and not have its original integrity

Funny enough, thinking in terms of cold and sample prep and ice behavior, the other day my ex husband left his ice cream in the refrigerator overnight. He asked about whether it was still OK to eat. I knew, from experiments done here (by my immediate supervisor), that

It finally paid off to think in terms of ice and temps. I also saved work a service call by finding out an issue and troubleshooting it myself.

I think in terms of ice. But by no means am I Jacques Dubochet or Marc Adrian (RIP). So, it felt pretty good when The Boss came by to ask a question about temperatures and phase changes. It made my day.

Eventually I became the mom of not one, but two, and even 3 microscopes that could do cryo, and the vitrification device. I still manage some of those.

Lena wanted to do ALL the things, but wanted to have an extra set of hands who would assist in guiding her lab members, troubleshooting, baking, repairing, etc

Many moons ago I remember telling Lena that I was only good for cryo (as in, cryo was pretty much all I did). I remember she said that it was exactly what was needed, because she didn't have enough hands or time to do all the work that was needed (care for holders, show people how to use them, etc)

CryoET of microbes inside an animal organ? Yes itโs possible! Check out our new preprint showing how we did it! What an amazing collaboration with amazing scientists who made this possible!

Today is the 10th anniversary of the acceptance of the Themis. In that time @davidamuller.bsky.social has established (and broken) records. Lena created a whole new level of cryo research. @bhgoodge.bsky.social will join is to push the limits. Mama STEM is missed

And, I probably won't travel home this winter, because not only are the flight schedules atrocious, they cost an arm and a leg, even with family chipping in. I'm anticipating being in a foul mood this winter.

Nearly $60 more per pay period (semi-monthly) to cover my son and I under my job's health insurance plan. Private plan and my employer covers a TON of the plan. I didn't vote for this fuckery.

So the crazy thing here is the company this is supposed to be about is Corning. The company famous for its glass research. And the across the board metric is a measure of how similar individual atom positions are in their CRYSTAL structures. So much is nuts here, but that should have been a red flag
