Now that we know you’ll do it for free for five weeks, what’s the rest of time? Thank you for your voluntary service—which is compulsory now and you can’t quit or we’ll arrest you. For terrorism.

Donald Trump has threatened New York City if it elects Zohran Mamdani.

Imagine a leader did somewhere in Asia, Africa or Latin America.

Would we regard that country as a democracy?

OpenAI pirated large numbers of books and used them to train models.

OpenAI then deleted the dataset with the pirated books, and employees sent each other messages about doing so.

A lawsuit could now force the company to pay $150,000 per book, adding up to billions in damages.

Even if you were willing to buy that an LLM/Gen AI tool has human-like intellect, you’re still left with the fact that an LLM doesn’t NEED a job to remain alive under capitalism, but a human does.

morality-wise, surely many would agree that humans should thus be given priority for jobs due to need

one might wonder about the motivations of the powerful who are highly incentivized to replace humans with cheaper and more tractable labor, and why THEY might feel motivated to argue that LLMs are Intellectually and Morally Equal to Humans, But Conveniently Only In Ways That Make Us Even More Money

SNAP benefits feed essential needs while still leaving many hungry for more Journalist and author Adam Chandler explains what so much of the conversation about them gets wrong.

As SNAP hangs in the balance for nearly 42 million people, misinformation is rampant. Myths of laziness and fraud persist when we should be talking about too low wages for workers, income inequality, and our threadbare social safety net.

In this guest post, Adam Chandler sorts fact from fiction:

Where is the plan? Republicans in DC have been talking about a forthcoming plan to fix health care for decades! Nothing has ever materialized except various attempts to take health care AWAY from people in order to cut taxes for the rich.

Mamdani *should* easily clear 50% tonight with these turnout numbers. Not that he needs to, but it'll send a message that NYC is ready to get off the dystopian American billionaire death spiral.

Over half of the corporations bankrolling Trump’s vanity ballroom are facing (or recently faced) federal investigations into wrongdoing — including violating workers’ rights or misleading consumers.

They also have a combined $279 BILLION in federal contracts.

Follow the money.

Inside TurboTax’s 20-Year Fight to Stop Americans From Filing Their Taxes for Free Using lobbying, the revolving door and “dark pattern” customer tricks, Intuit fended off the government’s attempts to make tax filing free and easy, and created its multi-billion-dollar franchise.

The IRS is reportedly not offering its Direct File program next year. Here’s a look back at how TurboTax owner Intuit spent two decades fighting to prevent Americans from filing their taxes online for free:

I think a thing we'll learn tonight is that people fucking hate what is going on and they will straight ticket vote against anyone involved in starving people while pillaging the country and kidnapping their neighbors. I don't think it matters at all who that person is.

Lots of animals love pumpkin! If you have a farm sanctuary nearby they may want your leftover Halloween pumpkins if they are fresh, clean, and unpainted. Contact them to find out!

This is incredibly untrue! Newspapers at the time LIED about the severity, in order to sell more! Actual accounts from the time say that there was no mass panic, that the vast majority of folks KNEW it was just a radio show!

Orson Welles’ "The War of the Worlds” aired on CBS #OTD in 1938. 🛸

The radio adaptation of H.G. Wells's novel caused many to believe we were under attack from aliens, proving that Americans are as gullible now as they were 87 years ago. #FilmSky

Need contacts, talking points, etc? use the site linked! It has a ton of info that is still relevant and useful!

Here’s why Halloween is the deadliest day of the year for child pedestrians Children are three times more likely to be fatally injured by a car on the holiday than any other evening of the year, and the risk grows to 10 times for kids 4 to 8.

Was just pointed to this. When I think about the energy that has been spent on panics about razor blades in apples and LSD-laced candy, and then the reality of kids getting killed on Halloween just by plain old drivers...

I think the quote about Xbox's competitors being movies and tik tok is one of the most enlightening things an exec has ever said. They do not see you as a consumer, interested in video games, who they need to make good games to sell you anymore. You are 12 waking hours, each of which is monetizable

Everyone deserves the amount of tasty, nutritious food that they want for their body. Yes, that includes treats. No, their size has nothing to do with it. It's a basic bodily autonomy issue. No one should be too poor to eat the food they want.
