I think part of the confusion is that the game treats all three of its very different game modes as equally valid (maybe not so much Top Ride)

It complicates the fundamental question of "What does it mean to play Kirby Air Ride" just slightly enough to leave new players asking "what is the point"

Kirby Air Riders is beautiful for those with the eyes to see it.

With that said it is indeed different than any other racing game and so I feel like it will always suffer from a mismatch of expectations and reality.

The Road Trip mode is great because it's functionally little lessons in the game.
