ICYMI: Yesterday, in the first installment of my new series, Unemployed in America, I wrote about my own layoff experience, the state of the news industry, and spoke with Matt Pearce about what can be done to shore up the profession before it falls completely off the cliff.

If you work in higher ed, you need to get your folks together and end the use of course evals or at least bar their consideration in evaluation, promotion, and hiring. This needed to happen yesterday because they don't measure learning, they measure instructor gender, but now it's a snitch pool.

Evaluation is important and we have good ways of evaluating instructors (observations, audits, mentoring). But the evidence is clear that asking students to Yelp review their instructors the week before exams yields no valuable information on teaching or learning--just customer satisfaction.

Some woman gave me a hard time because I left my kid alone in the airport while I used the bathroom. She was like, “But what if she needed help?” I was like, well, you were right there watching her, weren’t you? So my plan worked just like it was supposed to!

I was fine, if furious, but we both know it would’ve unfolded differently if I weren’t white.

I personally think it’s healthy and good for kids to do things on their own, especially since Stranger Danger is a paranoid fantasy. But I rarely let my kids out of my sight because people *will* call CPS.

Had the cops called on me because my 7yo daughter was playing too far away from me at the park. People are absolutely unhinged when it comes to kids.

Come babysit for 3 hours and you can play as MANY TIMES as you want!

Hired a string of babysitters to fill in the summer childcare gaps and the 5yo is teaching them all how to play chess (which she calls Chest), which involves launching all the pieces into the air via her Hot Wheels track.

Ha ha ha. I guess I can’t just say, “I need to say this somewhere so just stop whining for a minute and slog through it.”

Thus, although this book will soon pick up our story in the years following World War II, we need first to pause to examine the origins of large-scale global trade.
