I was at Starbucks last night for Crafty Night, signing and numbering prints, as I do, when a crotchety old boomer who was wearing a beat up Bernie for President shirt and had been watching Fox News clips of trump on his laptop takes off his headphones and says, "Huh" * waves his hand over the pile of prints l've been signing* "you the 'creator?'' "Yep." "You numberin' then so if I get number one, it's gonna be worth a lot of money?" "Lol, not so much that as numbering them so people who buy them know they're limited to 50 copies only. If they wind up being worth a bunch, mores the better." "How much?" "$30" Loud scoff and sucking in of air "Whew! That's quite a bit, ain't it? You got 50 of these? That's, what, about $1500, if you sell 'em all? Wow. How much it cost you to make these?" I blink slowly. Never looking up at him, I say "Well, if you don't count the 15 years of experience I needed to be able to make this, the student loans, the cost of the computer I drew it on, the price of the adobe suite, my mortgage, the cost of food & gas & all the other costs I spend to be able to make these, you mean?" I look at him. He just stares at me expectantly. "About $5." "Hell of a markup," he mumbles as he hits play and puts his headphones back on.
