David Huerta, President of California's largest union, was assaulted and detained Friday by ICE. Now the @aflcio.org, the biggest confederation of unions in America made up of nearly 15 million active and retired workers, is calling on members to protest on his behalf.

U.S. attorneys office in LA just sent an email saying David Huerta, president of SEIU California, has been charged with conspiracy to impede an officer. He’s been in jail since Friday and is expected to make his first appearance in federal court this afternoon

There are many seasoned immigrant movements, worker groups and impacted folks leading resistance on the ground in LA. Follow the lead of folks who know.

7. Recognize a national moment - you don’t need to know an immigrant in LA to dive in. You don’t need to have been to LA. This attack on basic freedoms of speech and due process and assembly is an attack on all of us. Put yourselves in the shoes of those most impacted - they would show up for you.

6. Slowing authoritarians down matters - the Steve Bannon flood the zone strategy to do a lot at once so no one can keep up is on full display. They will continue doing terrible things after today. We may not know exactly how to stop this, but if we slow them down, we save lives and buy time.

5. Self censorship doesn’t help - we are not asking anyone to break the law, but obeying orders in advance (before they are given) expands the authoritarian’s power without them having to do anything. Don’t do trumps bidding when no one has asked you to.

4. WE the PEOPLE make the moment (or don’t) - mobilization is rarely spontaneous, and the Admin doing horrible stuff doesn’t guarantee ppl will know or push back, everyone can help spread the word and share their horror at this overreach. Resistance isn’t given, it results from hustle. Do your part.

3. Solidarity forever - moral support, mutual aid, and real and symbolic acts of solidarity all matter a ton right now. Let people you know know that you’re thinking about them and ready to support and finding ways to pitch in - silence is complicity, none of this is normal.

Therefore, inviting people you don’t usually talk to or agree with to discuss this moment and pay attention is essential. Let’s focus on where we agree, we can work though tensions later as much as possible, huge numbers are needed to stop authoritarianism and huge numbers are furious!

2. Appeal to a big tent and find unexpected allies - we need EVERYONE, people of conscious are very poorly represented in positions of power! Most ppl don’t want Medicaid cut and hate corruption favoring billionaires, that’s why the Admin is trying to move fast before ppl realize all the harm.

This is not to minimize the horrors going on in any way, or to lecture as if we know all the answers, but rather to help folks make informed decisions, from everything we’ve read, peaceful, nonviolent resistance is the most likely to win in these scenarios.

1. Maintaining non-violent discipline is key: a demagogue’s dream is for people to turn violent so they can justify violence + claim both sides bad. Violence won’t help us win: research shows nonviolent mvmts are MORE successful v. authoritarian takeover than violent ones & stop power grabs faster.

University leaders are smart, they know their actions now will determine their institutions’ safety, their own legacy, & the future of academic freedom in the US. It’s increasingly clear that defending yourself and your institution is a safer option - follow Harvard’s lead and join their team.

Can the US afford to lose its 1.1 million international students? International students contributed $43.8bn to the US economy last year and created 378,175 jobs nationwide.

Macalester College offers free summer housing to international students with visa worries Many international students are worried immigration rules might change, leaving them stuck abroad for the fall semester if they go home for summer break.

More and more schools are seeing this option as more viable. For example, Macalester College in MN is providing all interested intl students w/ free housing this summer bc many fear they won’t be allowed to return. AND they got a new donation to make it possible!
