Forget about Trump's ulterior motives behind tariff regime.

Can tarrifs, in general, be used to cut ridiculous overconsumption and to plan sustainable degrowth?

Of course, they should be accompanied with welfare policies which blunt their effect on essentials commodities?

Marine Le Pen has been barred from contesting elections. Her conviction will not rob her of her credibility among people. It didn't do so for Trump either.

Right wing has to be defeated fair and square among people, not on technical grounds. Technocratic liberals don't get this.

I am repelled by common practice of naming research group after the name of the principal investigator (there is the option of naming it after the research activity). Formally naming group after yourself is kind of narcissistic and signals possessiveness over research carried out by other members.

I honestly believe our most powerful position in a toxic time that feeds on cynicism, apathy,& despair is to genuinely care and act for a better world.

Cynicism is our enemy. We should check it, incl. on the left. It’s not intellectually superior. It’s the virus they’re trying to infect us with. NO

Giving visas is not a figure of merit of any concrete good. It's a facilitation of brain drain. These visas are granted to well-to-do people from third world who can afford to have good education and aspire to go abroad. This is not a charity for the underprivileged from the periphery.

Yes, I agree. I just want to say that because of this very reason the progressive conservativism regarding the established contemporary academia is misplaced.

It does this out of necessity. The cheap supply of brain power from peripheral world is the crucial cannon fodder to survive in the game. I work in materials science and it's very rare to find trustworthy, reproducible research papers. It is very common to cherry picks scientific observations.

How egalitarian and progressive is academia? Let's evaluate that from how it treats the researchers and students without tenure, how it implements publish or perish policy, and how it sidelines scientific rigour over publishability.
