And specifically framing of open AI as worse is the current ad strategy for the company. Anthropic ads on Superbowl tomorrow are similarly targeting open AI and saying anthropic is the better choice for ppl disgruntled about Open AI doing ads. On one hand irony is back...

the ability to enforce a world (as projected by the system) onto the world. we'll never see the AI bubble pop in prisons, hospitals, schools, in the administration of stateless people such as refugees, etc... because the capacity to impose a fucked up model on disempowered people remains tantalizing

This was a lovely read. Parts reminded me of my husband's magic show on how to find gratitude in dark times. It's in SF next month if by chance you're in area

Every "smart" tool is a tool of surveillance. Every tool of surveillance is a tool of control. And that goes for tools with "intelligence" too.

Thinking of this for all the creative fields as institutions are closing, museums etc. you always have small scrappy pop ups but it's not the same as the jobs and ecosystem of work created. I have critique of course of how they fail, but the void of their absence is detrimental, less $, etc

I was just looking into how people are setting up agents for moltbook basically like a home alone scream๐Ÿ˜ฑ of what a stupid idea to hand over your computer root access to some download off the internet. I can't even. I thought this was the era of the end of trust! Is there a massive gas leak?

8: Mandate public participation with โ€œhard lawโ€ requirements
with concrete enforcement mechanisms.

It is not enough for public participation to be advisory or recommendedโ€”or delivered by the benevolence of corporate entities. Rather, hard law requirements mandating public participation and creating enforceable rights to participation are foundational to ensuring that decision-makers take participatory requirements seriously and that the public has real
influence.

Hard law requirements ensure continuity within organizations over time, help build institutional norms around participation, and increase trust with affected communities. An ideal statute for public participation in AI would incorporate the preceding guidelines by:

โ€ข	 mandating public participation;
โ€ข	 defining meaningful participation and the goals of participation;
โ€ข	 describing the publicโ€™s role at various stages of the AI life cycle;
โ€ข	 requiring two-way forms of deliberation at specific stages;
โ€ข	 directing culturally appropriate outreach to affected communities;
โ€ข	 identifying obligations to increase access for marginalized communities;
โ€ข committing funds for public participation and specialized support on technological issues; and
โ€ข setting forth enforcement mechanisms to ensure compliance with public participation requirements.

The hard law foundations of participatory AI is a theme I'm expecting to come up in quite a few papers @pairs.site in Feb - and reminding myself of the work already done to set out this in Michelle's paper: datasociety.net/library/demo...

OpenAIโ€™s president is a Trump mega-donor Greg Brockman said he started โ€˜getting involved politicallyโ€™ in 2025.

Open AI's Brockman & wife donated 25 million to Trump in September. Plus they gave 50 million to dark money super PAC with Andreessen H & Palantir's Lonsdale. These are not normal token sums compared to the other techies. They are some of the largest www.theverge.com/ai-artificia...

College approached and paid student to write op-ed in The Dartmouth The Dartmouth ran the article on Nov. 17 without knowledge that the College had been involved.

The college at which I'm employed, which has signed a contract with the AI firm that stole books from 131 colleagues & me, paid a student to write an op-ed for the student paper promoting AI, guided the writing of it, and did not disclose this to the paper. www.thedartmouth.com/article/2026...

๐Ÿšฉ @snopes.com you cannot verify that video and AI images are not AI generated using online verification tools. They are not accurate. This mistake is wildly dangerous in this political moment and could destroy your brand. Don't ask your AI factbot ask an expert (one who isn't selling you AI tools)

Meta saying they may spend $135 billion mostly on AI pushing the stock up is more a reflection of a pusher's desire rather than of Meta's worth. I worked in finance with survivors of 80s crashes who traded thru mortgage crisis. Belief can buoy a lot but a tiny bump can change it all

The anger that speaks loudly for most critics isn't against things like usefulness for specific tasks but anger at the political economy of AI, the extraction, the culture, the denial of how it fails, the violence companies are perpetuating, the entire apparatus of harms that are a bigger priority.

I found this interesting because I would easily be placed in the AI skeptic bucket and your thoughts here are the same as mine except the past stochastic parrots line. I think there is a communication problem that has cleaved out black and white when it's not what the criticism is saying

Everyone is different re salary depends on not understanding. Many inexperienced young nerdsneed a job & believe what they are told: they are tech for good. I've seen some who were ignorant, naive,or too privileged finally see harm, learn, & take action. All my growth was from my ignorance too.

Friend tried & could not share the ICE wiki link on Facebook so I tried and yes even as comment, the wiki is censored. Am I now on a list for testing to see if Meta blocked this Url? Not surprising, but w tiktok censorship of ICE critical speech, is it by request & not voluntary. Slippery slope

I've spoken to hundreds of tech workers at places like Palantir, rank & file + higher up. I only ever met 1 that started his job aware of a moral low shenanigans & not caring. Some grow aware. Most see a good mission. Mobilizing tech workers, a strong labor movement could move the needle

Non tik tok social media is full of people sharing that their posts on US politics, Minnesota events, privacy, have been silently banned. Wiener is a California state senator. Some activist accounts have been fully banned. Tiktok blaming power outage but users disagree and say it was targeted
