A field of flax with soft curves and lines left by its cultivation
So, as the day ended, the field of flax offered up its lines and curves.

Gorgeous!
26.01.2026 17:39 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0To be honest, it's always about making paintings, Christoph! (I think I wish I was one!) It's the transformation bit - I think I'm one of those Photo-Secessionist types - pictorialism, he cried! (Much to the disgust of the modernists) π
26.01.2026 17:24 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Extraordinary - so, were you in a helicopter, swinging from a rope?!
26.01.2026 15:05 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0A field of flax in the Kent countryside in late afternoon
And all the while I was taking these photographs, a lark was singing its heart out high above my head.

26.01.2026 11:26 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0A field of flax photographed in the golden hour
The sun was already lowering when we arrived, the shadow of a large tree lengthening across the field, sunlight escaping through gaps in its canopy to here and there feather the flax with gold...

Fab!
26.01.2026 07:58 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I've just watched this myself finally (having always loved the poster since I was a nipper) so was taken aback to discover the monsters in question were not caterpillars, but snails!
25.01.2026 08:58 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Iβll leave you guessing how these βpaperweightsβ images were made, though a 4K webcam was certainly in the mix!

A creepy visitor crawls out from under the table...
Turns out, there was someone living in the old abandoned farmhouse after all...

Hello Andy - I enjoyed this film a lot. Strongest horror film for a while; amazing performance from Sally Hawkins (her character had me shouting at the screen) - really gnarly in places and also terribly sad.

The muse can take you to unexpected places: I found myself in an empty swimming pool stripped back to its concrete shell, where the wet walls and drying patina gave me landscapes.

22.01.2026 17:13 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0You would have smiled at 'the artist at work' - which was me leaning over a bowl of sudsβwith a strawβblowing hard to make the bubbles and then quickly photographing them before they could pop again...
22.01.2026 17:13 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Inspired by Ruth Asawaβs sculptures, I made my own little constructions and photographed them in soft light to explore line, shadow and shape.

Hey Rain - well, you've brought some sunshine today! Thanks so much! And as a bit of a horticultural type myself, your images are dramatic and bring out the otherworldliness of plants!
My own garden is tiny: themodernhouse.com/journal/how-...
I tried to make βflowers of fireβ without burning down the house: big bowls of soapy water and lots of bubbles gave me shimmering planes and delicate sparks to photograph β like the last traces of a firework display.

An impressionist photograph of a large bird in flight.
Not a bird, but the semblance of one.

A long-exposure photograph inspired by old 1950s science-fiction movies.
1950s sci-fi was the cue here - a model planet and some long exposure 'space rays'.

A close-up photograph of an eyeβexcept it's a still life of household objects to produce that effect.
No actual eyes involved β or photographed. These βfundusβ images were made with whatever I had to hand, channelling a low-budget film-maker: red food colouring, a rubber glove, olive oil...
