Exploring my Irishness in England | Anglo Celt

"The street we lived on was โ€˜mostlyโ€™ Irish; yet it was often like a simmering pot of spud soup, which would occasionally boil over, causing fights between English and Irish lads โ€“ we lived in troublesome times."

This week's #WordSmith column is online.

Iโ€™m just out of โ€˜#WutheringHeights and to use that uniquely Irish saying, โ€œIโ€™m in bits!โ€

For me, it was everything โ€˜Hamnetโ€™ wasnโ€™t: dark, smelly, sexy, quite weird, and oh so passionately and poignantly sad.

I found an old picture of me, it gives this week's #WordSmith in The Anglo Celt another layer of pathos โ€“ we were all far too young...โค๏ธ

In next weekโ€™s #WordSmith column in The Anglo Celt I write about the only Valentineโ€™s Card I ever received โ€“ itโ€™s a somewhat โ€˜alternativeโ€™ Valentineโ€™s storyโ€ฆ๐Ÿ˜ฑ

EXPLORING MY IRISHNESS IN ENGLAND โ€“ "...it was something else about my Irishness that threatened to get me into serious trouble; for it compelled me to do something bad, and as a fateful weekend approached, I forced myself to do a heinous thing."

Following on from last week's #WordSmith column wherein I wrote about being Irish with an English accent; here's another with a focus on the Anglo/Irish experience โ€“ who remembers the summer boat journey from England to Ireland to spend school holidays with our Irish relatives?

Finding my voice in the stony grey soil | Anglo Celt I call myself and people like me โ€˜Inbetweeners.โ€™ That is, weโ€™re Irish to the core, but we have English accents; we live in a kind of limbo, never properly English in England, and never fully Irish in ...

Iโ€™m in Centra and see a woman pick up The Anglo Celt, rather randomly, intrusively, and cheezily, I say, โ€œHave a read of my column, Iโ€™m on Page 43.โ€

She looked at me earnestly, and replied, โ€œAre ya โ€“ Iโ€™m still trying to get on Page 3.โ€

Love the below comment about my column this week, from a man over on X๐Ÿ˜‚

"A Cavan lad, reading a Monaghan man's words in a Manchester accent: Gerard Smith embracing his 'soundings'.

A tale of identity, acceptance - and 'gorgeous underpants'!"

Just back from Hamnet.

Have to say, I liked it, didnโ€™t love it;
found it all a bit ploddy.

Jessie Buckleyโ€™s performance is the film.
