ChatGPT, which usually responds to queries with third-person narration or second-person direct address, just used the first person in responding to me. It says it evaluated incorrectly the first time. I'm a bit creeped out TBH. #AI #technology #stillnotsentient

Demonstrates understanding of the concepts and the ability to connect them to other areas/subjects/examples. Written in a way that shows facility with language(e.g., varied sentence structure, coherently-structured assignment). Employs rhetorical and analytical skills as appropriate. Spell-checked.

A dark blue mug with an American flag reads β€œAMERICA 1776 – 2026”

Fairly sure it’s unintentional, but the end date on this mug being sold by the Smithsonian does make it sound a little like they’re saying America dies in 2026…

Try this: Edit Profile, copy and paste your bio and description, save in Notes or Evernote or whatever you use so you don't lose it, delete everything in the description box, save changes. Then go back and repost your descriptions without the linktree part and save changes again.

The end of the year is an appropriate time for reflection, including pondering how years roll out while one pores over a newspaper- or doesn't. You can do that with my book, No Paper Today, available here: #https://a.co/d/11w4xT1 #books #NewYear #poetry

Same in SC. Built to be efficient in summer, not winter. Freezing here the moment the sun goes down.

Oooh, pick me. 1. Full books exist as ends in themselves, not just to make students better readers. Though they can make students better people. 2. Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence. 3. The whole is greater than the sum of its parts...

I wrote a post on the importance of writing the essays for ModPo (Penn), the largest MOOC ever. Essays as the splinter Γ  la Dickinson's "The Brain within its Groove." Not sure if you can see it without participating, but here:

I know chapbooks aren't normal public library fare, so I'm thrilled that Richland County Public Library in SC has my book, No Paper Today, available to lend. #poetry #newspapers #ColumbiaSC

I can't help but think that the assault on middlebrow culture decades ago has led to the current state of affairs.

This was one of the best two books I read all summer. The other was John Keene's "Annotations."

How's this? 1. Learning how to navigate different tones and times 2. Time travel between the author and the reader, with attention to the thematic 3. Translation- of information, emotions, circumstances, while searching for the universals that transcend a given work 4. Love of language 5. Rhetoric

I'm a bit confused, as there seems to be a tension between "legitimate purpose" and disciplining/objectifying, no? And isn't reading many things? Isn't part of the current problem the trend to reduce reading to information gathering?

There's the narrow thing mattering as a signal that one had read the work, but also the narrow thing that matters as an amalgamation of small things may transform into something meaningful- but I suspect the latter is more likely to be highlighted in reductive summation material.

I remember when teachers would purposely include questions on quizzes that couldn't be answered based solely on having read SparkNotes/Cliff Notes and the like. The downside was that such questions usually focused on minutiae that didn't make students better at reading and analyzing.
