Nuclear waste is a complete nonissue, coal just throws that shit in the air, but SMRs do have higher operating costs.

It was a massive mistake of i.e. Germany to shut down its nuclear reactors, but at this point it would be a misappropriation of funds to spend it on nuclear and not solar + battery. Nuclear is ofc still useful in say the more northern latitudes like Sweden or in space constrained areas like Japan.

I think Americans are understandably scared of taxes because
