The other short story I gave her to read was a bit more ham-fisted. Doris Lessing's To Room 19, about a married woman who kills herself in a hotel room to get away from her oppressive married life. Oof! But I suppose Alison can't say I didn't show her my dark side right from the start!

This book changed me & how I looked at what literature could be, w/ characters like Can o' Beans, Dirty Sock, Spoon, Painted Stick, Conch Shell & Salome doing the dance of the 7 veils on Super Bowl Sunday to save us all. Vonnegut's Cat's Cradle sent me into existential crisis. This book healed it.

31 years later, I can thank Robbins for his part in this relationship of a lifetime. So it is, that I love him both selfishly and intellectually. May you rest well, Mr. Robbins. Thank you for all you gave the world. And for all you gave me, including the credibility to win over the girl.

I seduced my wife with books. The 1st I gave her was Tom Robbins' Skinny Legs & All. My lit professor was friends with Robbins and sent him classroom questions about his work. Buried in my library is a copy of Skinny Legs with a faxed sheet of paper with Robbins' hand written responses...
