When I was younger and unaware I may have hidden the fact that I was actually of African heritage. Growing up in an era where being African wasn't 'cool' or 'popular' and just me being so uneducated of where I was from due to age, it became a thing of me just saying I was Portuguese and it was easier to say. However now I am older I have slowly let that go and have become a lot more confident and proud to be of African heritage.

Time to talk #mixedrace

I sometimes feel like I donโ€™t belong, as if I donโ€™t have a community or am fully accepted by people. I am often questioned about my name and my face and have experienced odd comments about my appearance when people hear I am mixed-race.

Frequently being asked questions about your background because you are #mixedrace can be tiresome for some, as you may feel the need to constantly explain your identity.
Can anyone relate to this???

However I struggled greatly with understanding what I was. Being Mauritian in itself confuses people as culturally there is a lot of Indian background both culturally and ethnically, and then adding Spanish to the mix means that a lot of times my identity would be lost or misunderstood even by me.

I always identify more as a Brazilian even though I never lived there and I was raised for 14 years in France and studied in the French system until university. I think it is because when I'm amongst Brazilians I'm accepted as one of them no question asked, whereas if I say I'm French to a French person they would always ask โ€˜ok, but what's your origin?โ€™. Growing-up mixed-race made me hyper aware of not belonging, especially in France.

However, times are changing. Now, individuals of mixed race can finally express their feelings and share their experiences, allowing others to listen and understand. This newfound connectivity is beginning to dissolve the sense of isolation. One individual eloquently shared, "I am not alone. I have finally found others who think and feel like me. Itโ€™s okay now... everything is going to be okay."

It was such a tangible experience of being "other". I could flit between many mixed groups of friends, but I realised that I will never be enough of any group to truly belong. I didn't look exactly like any of them, but also my cultural experience and exposure was not the same. I felt like each group fit a part of me but never fully the whole.

๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ“š One of my favourites: We Deserve Monuments by Jas Hammonds. Avery is a queer biracial (Black & white) teen who moves to a small town in Georgia to live with her grumpy grandmother. There's family secrets, a mystery about the town's racist past and a cute lovestory. Beautifully written!
