Krampus Nacht is also still celebrated by adults here, through a sort of Secret Santa tradition we call 'Surprise'. It's traditional that you make the gift appear as non-gift looking as possible and personalized, like a hockey stick, radio, or other item. A poem is also commonly included.

Contrary to Krampus though, we also completely removed the mention of some sort of punishment for being bad other than you just straight up don't get any gifts. Because I guess having to hear your friends boast at school is a worse punishment nowadays LMAO

Since then, they aren't called 'Zwarte Piet' anymore but just 'Piet' and there's many different types, like with the smurfs! There's a 'Hoofd Piet' as a sort of overseer, a 'professor Piet' who does research into new toys, etc. And the make up? It got replaced with soot smears :)

Howdy, dutch person here! Yes I do think they might share a common origin of some kind. That being said 'Zwarte Pier' was problematic much as some older dutch folks insist it wasn't. Sure, they were not slaves to Saint Nick, but the depiction was uh... yikes.

Family is as important as you choose it to be, including who you consider a part of it
