ok i got this game figured out. the "old world" was just our society and is also the world depicted in more's novel. more got locked in akademia by the sanctist church because they didn't want that knowledge to get out. also the humans are remnants of the old world and that's why they're called that

i really like that in fights where you need to have a certain person in your party it lets you actually assemble a party beforehand instead of just kicking someone out at random
