I think because AI is being sold seriously as a data aggregator. First thing you see in a google search is an AI synopsis, as though that's reliable. But people who'll storm a pizza parlour or mosque "because someone said..." are likely to believe it, and maybe anything generated by ChatGPT, too.

ChatGPT: When AI upends the real world, mixing 'real elements with crazy, disgusting hallucinations'
YouTube video by FRANCE 24 English ChatGPT: When AI upends the real world, mixing 'real elements with crazy, disgusting hallucinations'

Man asks ChatGPT "Who is [his own name]". It gives some correct info (like his hometown) but adds that he murdered two of his kids.

As if humans aren't quite adept enough at inventing our own damaging conspiracy theories.

I see where you're coming from, but this advice runs the risk of ghettoising certain writers. If, eg, African American women, or South African lesbians, should only write protagonists from their own culture and identity, then their work will inevitably be siloed.

Write generously for an audience who loves your work, not defensively for an audience who hates it

There's a wave of impersonator accounts claiming to be various authors on here. Check they are legit. The replies are often an instant giveaway. For instance, multiple identical requests to start a conversation via direct message are a scam artist. Verify anyone claiming to represent an author too.

Fun fact: If someone quotes a post of yours in a way that is unwelcome (as is commonplace on Twitter/X) there is a tool to combat the unwanted attention. Simply click the three dot menu on the quote post & click "Detach quote". This removes your post from their quote post. Useful to know, do share!

Two Scottish courts agreed with the Scottish government that transwomen are women, but an appeal is currently being heard in the UK Supreme Court.

Anti-trans lawyers today; Scottish govt's tomorrow. Could be several months till a final decision.

I always wonder whether articles like this would be framed differently in countries that *weren't major colonists themselves.

Read this brilliant, horrifying and haunting book in the late 90s. I've never felt strong enough to re-read it, but it still has a place on my shelves. Octavia E Butler was an absolute genius, and pretty much everything she wrote is amazing.

Yep, there's an actual tidal power array around 10 miles from my house!
We've tried turning the heaters down and gritting our teeth, but then you get mould from the condensation. You're absolutely right that nationalisation is the only reasonable option.

Apologies to all for disappearing a few years ago. I kept thinking I'd get back to Real Life any minute, but health and family issues just multiplied. Things are beginning to ease up at last, so I hope to be here at least occasionally. (All fingers and toes crossed; touch wood.)
