#OTD in 1941, men across the country lined up to volunteer for military service following the attack on Pearl Harbor. The Navy ordered all recruiting stations to stay open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. These men enlisting in the Navy in Boston look ready to fight.

FADM Chester Nimitz believed the U.S was fortunate that the attack on Pearl Harbor came as a surprise. Had the U.S. known of the approaching Japanese fleet, the American fleet would have been sent to intercept it and then been entirely lost to a superior force.

Oh, and another thing Bluesky folks, I may go on about this guy. The murder machine Sir Arthur Chichester. The worst person you've never heard of. Some Irish get wired about Cromwell. I don't. Cromwell could teach Chichester nothing

Just making it off a landing craft and onto the beach at Betio Island during the Battle of Tarawa on this day in 1943 took a heroic effort for many Marines. Private First Class James Collins from South Carolina related his experience to a reporter, Robert L. Sherrod, of "Time" magazine.

ADM Chester Nimitz kept three questions tacked above his desk that his subordinates were expected to answer when they came to him with a proposal. He also believed that the questions could be applied to problems in daily life.

I am missing being around Caen and going for my walks. This IWM film reel shows just how much damage was caused from 6 June to 8 July. A very different city to one you can walk around today. I love walking and trying to match these locations!
