Bridget “Biddy” Mason (1818–1891) was an American entrepreneur, philanthropist, and community leader who rose from enslavement to become one of the first Black women to own property in Los Angeles. Mason was born enslaved in the Deep South and forced westward in 1847 with her owner, Robert Marion Smith, who ignored California’s anti-slavery laws. In 1856, aided by free Black Angelenos Robert and Minnie Owens, Mason successfully petitioned a Los Angeles court for freedom for herself and her family. The landmark ruling by Judge Benjamin Hayes became one of California’s earliest freedom suits, setting a precedent for other enslaved people to claim liberty. After emancipation, Mason worked as a midwife and nurse, serving both wealthy and working-class residents. Her careful savings allowed her to purchase land in downtown Los Angeles in 1866—an area that would later become part of the city’s financial district. She accumulated properties valued at roughly $300,000 (equivalent to several million dollars today) and used her resources to establish community services, including a traveler’s aid center and the city’s first elementary school for Black children. In 1872, Mason helped found the First African Methodist Episcopal Church of Los Angeles, the city’s oldest Black congregation. She funded the church’s property taxes and minister’s salary. Remembered as the “Grandmother of Los Angeles,” Mason’s influence endures through civic memorials such as Biddy Mason Memorial Park and organizations like the Biddy Mason Charitable Foundation, which continues her mission of community uplift.
