On this day in 1928, three African American residents of Kanawha County WV were refused entry to the Charleston Public Library due to their race. The ensuing court case would go all the way to the WV Supreme Court giving us our own Brown v. BOE over 25 years before the landmark US Supreme Court case

On this day in 1848, Putnam County WV was formed from parts of Cabell, Kanawha, and Mason Counties.
Notable residents include Samuel Simon Gordon, who played baseball in the American Negro Leagues and Minnie Buckingham Harper who became the first black female legislator in the US.
