Israel is still bombing Gaza

The press isn't covering it as much but it's still happening

Can I let you in on a little secret?

Billionaire philanthropy isnโ€™t charity.

Itโ€™s PR to distract you from low wages, labor exploitation, and a tax system thatโ€™s rigged for the rich.

Being a thesis supervisor the first time. Reading the studentโ€™s paper. I am kind of worried, am I just nudging him to be a mini-me? Maybe Iโ€™m doing supervising wrong, maybe there is a way to supervise without end up just making them a duplicate of me ๐Ÿ˜

But โ€œincluding due to start workโ€ seems to be super major factor tho! I take that to mean people who are technically unemployed but already have things lined up. If so, and without further info about this, it is just not clear what to make of the data.

Boycott Starbucks. Stand with the employees.

A Babson College student wanted to surprise her family for Thanksgiving. She was deported instead. - The Boston Globe Any Lucia Lopez Belloza was at Logan to catch a flight to Texas when immigration authorities detained her as she was about to board the plane.

I feel much safer today knowing that we deported a Babson College student back to a country where she hasn't lived since childhood.

She wasn't even flying internationally. She was flying to Texas.

One explanation for economic populism in the US is the recurring cycle of bubbles and bailouts that happens without any democratic input

โ€ฆ if banning AI is not long term solution because banning cannot be done, then this whole cultivating literacy thing also cannot be done, for it also involves banning AI in some fashion?

How does that prevent students from using AI to evaluate AI essays? I mean this is why some want to ban AI. I donโ€™t see how cultivating AI literacy is an alt solutionโ€ฆ cultivating AI literacy also requires teachers to ban students from using AI in some tasks so that they can cultivate said literacyโ€ฆ

Excerpt from a BBC article: ""We usually work, 10, 11 or 12 hours a day," says a 49-year-old woman from Jiangxi unwilling to give her name. "On Sundays we work around three hours less."

She is in an alleyway, where a dozen people are huddled around a row of bulletin boards.

They are reading the job ads on the board, while examining the stitching on a pair of chinos draped over it.

This is Shein's supply chain. The factories are contracted to make clothes on order - some small, some big. If the chinos are a hit, orders will ramp up and so must production. Factories then hire temporary workers to meet the demand their permanent staff cannot fulfil.

The migrant worker from Jiangxi is looking for a short-term contract - and the chinos are an option.

"We earn so little. The cost of living is now so high," she says, adding that she hopes to make enough to send back to her two children who are living with their grandparents.

"We get paid per piece," she explains. "It depends how difficult the item is. Something simple like a t-shirt is one-two yuan [less than a dollar] per piece and I can make around a dozen in an hour.""

The people who make Shein's clothes labor for ten to twelve hours per day (in violation of China's labor laws), some up to seven days a week, and earn as little as 15 to 30 cents per t-shirt.

I really wish people would realize the guardrails here are about privacy not technology.

This is literally treated as radical, outside-the-bounds of normal political discourse.

But Elon Musk gets $1,000,000,000,000.

Enough to by every unhoused person in America a $1.3 million home.

Enough to cover federal spending on school lunches for 57 years.
