Our new study: territorial cichlids ramped up metabolic rate around conspecifics, while cardinal tetras showed little change. And only in tetras did individual sociability relate to metabolic rate. Energetic consequences of โ€œsocial livingโ€ depend on social system. link.springer.com/article/10.1...

The myth of the metabolic baseline: how sleep-wake cycles undermine a foundational assumption in organismal biology

๐ŸงตTHREAD: (1/7) Standard metabolic rate (SMR) is one of biology's most measured traits. We argue it isn't the constant baseline it's assumed to be. Our preprint discusses how sleep-wake cycles create a 'metabolic mosaic' that requires us to rethink how we interpret SMR. ecoevorxiv.org/repository/v...

If anyone at #SEBconference in Antwerp this week wants to hear about field metabolic rates in pelagic fishes (from otolith isotope analysis), I'll be talking on Wednesday - and happy to meet up / chat if schedules allign and you reply to this!

It's amazing to see this book out! Proud to have contributed a chapter, led by Amelia Munson, and with @shaunkillen.bsky.social, on the effects of multiple stressors on animal behaviour. Thank you @bbmwong.bsky.social and @ulrikacandolin.bsky.social for the huge work ๐Ÿ™

Outstanding meta-analysis of 165 studies led by Izzy Tiddy, examining effects of pollutants on individual sociability and group cohesion in fish. Complex effects observed across various pollutant classes. With Amelia Munson, @cortesedaphne.bsky.social @drtblew.bsky.social ! doi.org/10.1016/j.en...
