At my book club and someone said a story we read had nods to Frankenstein and Alice in Wonderland in it. And then I thought “oooh, what about Frankenstein in Wonderland” and then I realized that from the golem’s perspective, he’s always in Wonderland.

This will hit small manufacturers and budding designers hardest of all. Steve Jackson isn’t a small name in this space. A price hike for them is a death knell for a smaller press.

Plenty of games out there that embody the ethos and spirit to use the moniker. No bones there. Just… if I see something like Corporationpunk, I may flip a table.

If a game is simply a reskin of Wanton, Unfettered Violence (TM) but this time with purple mohawks! …that’s not punk.

Okay maybe I called my game “hopepunk.” But I don’t feel bad about that. Keener, more interested minds have dug into the overuse of the suffix to describe stories and games that are simply edgy, without embodying any actual punk ethos.

I love me some “-punk” games. But good-got-dang not everything needs to be -punk. I wrote a game that was about actual punks flying pirate ships around a sentient void, but I’m not out here calling my game piratepunk, shippunk, musicpunk, sentientvoidpunk, or trombonepunk.

The story ends well: we ran to get towels and saved the table as best we could. They are probably sick of me telling this story, but it's the most hilarious meet cute between two game companies I've ever heard of. Please consider supporting their (likely dry by now) games.

Funny story: I met Josh and Chris at GameFace Con in Baltimore. The con had been open for 10 minutes. Their games were laid out nicely. They were friendly without being overbearing. Their games were good. I was impressed! Then, to celebrate, [name redacted] spilled a beer across their entire table.

We are sad to announce that we have been told by Wizards that they will no longer support the VML program with either funding or invites to Organized Play events. Without this support - especially the invites - it is impossible for the league to continue, and there will be no more VML seasons going forward. Over the past five years, we’ve radically changed competitive Magic for the better. When we started the program with 26 players back in Season 1, we never thought that we would end up having served hundreds of competitors and with over a thousand people in our community. We have sent cohorts of people to the Set Championships, Regional Championships, and Pro Tour. As a result of our program, representation of people of marginalized genders at the highest levels of play has multiplied from a handful at each event to over twenty who will play at PT Chicago. Several of our team members and players have gone on to be hired to work at Wizards. We are also proud of the change we’ve created in the broader sense. The Magic community is a much more diverse, vibrant, and inclusive place than it was five years ago. The gender balance at in-person events has improved significantly, and the overall image of the game has changed for the better. We don’t claim to have caused all of that, but we are happy knowing our efforts have played a part. We want to thank all the organizations who have worked with us and supported the cause: Good Luck High Five, Lodestone Coffee, NRG, Team Arclight, MTG Melee, BOP!, and the many wonderful creators, personalities, and players who have contributed.
