Reminds me of a director I used to work with who would use this as a starting riff for workshops on those cold, wet mornings when no-one wanted to be there.

Yorkshire dales lead mining industry, Cornish tin, iron in the Sussex weald. The list goes on.

With all the growth around Cambridge, I'm also struck by the number of settlements the pre-development archaeology is turning up. We've always been a crowded little island with places rising and falling.

What can you do to turn around isolated towns that have lost their main industry?
Some good discussion on here this morning I thought, I’m catching up.

Imo the answer is the same for any other place: focus as much as you can on the assets you do have.
Easier said than done, but better than nothing…

The Republic of Ireland is often hailed as an economic success story.

There's a family story of my grandfather's trouser button popping off early one morning. His mum grabbed him and sewed it back on in situ.

It wasn't until later that he realised she'd sewn his trousers to his vest and so there was no way of gaining access when needed.

Along with everything else that's gone on over the last three decades, did it act as a stimulus for growth?
