Congrats that looks as though it was a rewarding article to developโespecially the acknowledgment of your scholarship by its publication!

New from @skip-rhudy.bsky.social: Iโve got a post-graduate certificate in artificial intelligence (AI). Iโm also an author, and I believe writers and publishers should not use AI in publishing. But the reasons I oppose using AI are not the usual ones you hear.

Trump - with his devotion to Putin, abandonment of Ukraine, and lies about history- is the antithesis of everything Ronald Reagan stood for. He is aligning America with the enemies of the very freedom that generations have fought and died to defend.

There are great applications of Generative AI, but I dislike AI used to calculate texts pretending to be art or literature.
Computers don't experience life, they add 0s and 1s.
I want to hear from humans, not blind, deaf, and dumb Turing machines.
AI text is not meaningful art.

Some (perhaps many) years ago, a new critical theory swept academia and then disappeared. It was called "Reception Theory". For me, it became the only theory about reading literature that made sense. Here's a glimpse:

09.01.2025 16:37 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0I want to let folks in the Austin, TX area know that Stephanie Ortega, the translator of Else Jerusalem's Red House Alley, our latest Recovered Book from @bhousepress.bsky.social, will be appearing at Alienated Majesty Books on Tuesday, 28 January at 6PM to talk about rescuing lost books. Join us!
07.01.2025 22:00 โ ๐ 18 ๐ 4 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0In happier news Red House Alley is on its merry way to my home. I recall seeing (not necessarily reading) those early sci-fi / literary novels you list. I have a future project planned. I don't see the conflict between sci-fi and literary aspiration. What, do I denounce Bradbury? No. No, I don't.

Thanks for this. I bet at least some of the titles you mention are to be found on Abes or Thrifty or even EvilBay. But a welcome riposte / anecdote to the likes of what this article justly laments: unherd.com/2025/01/lost...
