And that’s the point. When you find yourself willing to work through the cringe, that’s when you know, you’ve found something you truly love.

But if not, well, maybe you've never loved it that much.

But I deeply love writing, and I’ve braved some incredible embarrassments for my craft, in front of peers, professors, mentors, writers that I admire. Countless people have seen me stumble and fall apart. But I worked through all of it, because that’s what was needed for me to grow as a writer.

There are things I don’t do because I fear the cringe too much. I never play the piano in front of people now because I don’t have a perfectly practiced song ready to go anymore.

I don’t dance, because I don’t have a dancing bone in my body and the idea of showing how awkwardly I move mortifies me.

The 1st draft of my book was unreadable. I still showed it around to people, to get their advice, to get their feedback, to see what I was doing wrong, was doing right.

After 5 rewrites and heavy developmental edits, with each stage laying bare my numerous mistakes, the book became what it is now.

Cringe is nothing new. It’s just a new word attached to that ever present fear of being embarrassed by your lack of skill. Cringe culture has always existed.

And while it’s human to be wary of mistakes, if the fear of cringe is enough to prevent you from going and making those mistakes, why bother.

I saw a video where Ocean Vuong talked about how he observes a prevalence of cringe culture from his students, an increased tendency of becoming more self-conscious of trying. And how that paralyzes them from pursuing and practicing their craft.

Now, if that's the case, you should just stop.

A stranger on the web told me I look like Kazuo Ishiguro and I'm afraid it has led to my ego being dangerously inflated.

And aside from the important ethical concerns, it is for your sake, that you should put your own writing first, above anything that the machine can generate.

Because you are depriving yourself of the amazing growth and self-discovery you could’ve experienced.

But more importantly, the process is how you figure out what you look like on the page. It’s how you find out in what form your creativity, your character, everything that uniquely makes you, express themselves in the written word.

Now, why is the process so important?

Well, if you have to ask that question, you’re not a writer. So that’s the first litmus test.

What people want with AI is not literature, it’s products. What people often want to create with AI is not art, it’s a product that they would’ve bought or commissioned from an artist, but these companies now provide this workaround for you so you can bypass the process altogether.
