given more time i would've done more research, spent more time on the writing, created a few more original visuals, maybe messed with the text spacing and sizing a bit more, but i'm still pretty happy with this.

a page with a red background labelled "pitching." the text which covers the page reads "The pitcher is defending. He stands on the pitcher’s plate and throws as hard as he can at the man opposite him, but fundamentally, he is on the defending team. His goal is to prevent violence, at all costs. Should he play well, no contact is made between ball and bat. When a pitcher succeeds, nothing happens. The fastest of fastballs barely scratch 1/10th of the speed of a 9mm bullet fired from a handgun. See a pitching record and a shooting range target, both pictured below. Observe the similarities and differences."
Beneath the text are two compressed images of a shooting range target and a pitching record. they look vaguely similar. The pitcher, about to pitch, stands in front of the person-shaped shooting range target.

a red page labelled "batting." with right-aligned text that says

"The batter is attacking. Picked out of his team, striking from home, he stares down the pitcher, the only other man in the world, and dares him to fire. You come to a baseball game to see a man hit a ball with a bat. When a batter succeeds, he does violence. Baseball is an American game; this act makes him a hero.

There is a tangible energy to a home run.
The pitcher will never receive this.
The batter and the pitcher are both aware of this fact."

the batter stands ready. behind him are two compressed images of a baseball bat wrapped in barbed wire and a baseball bat spiked through with nails and covered in blood. the nail-bat is pointed directly towards the pitcher.

the left side of a two-page spread labeled "belief." three white-bordered compressed images alternate sides of the page. first, a cropped picture of a colonel sanders statue, accompanied by the text "Thrown to the river by zealots, he was an imitation used as effigy, drowned in celebration. Years later, they drew him back out. Now he is quiet, plastic under soil." then, a picture of a William Sianis' pet goat Murphy, accompanied by the text "Leviticus 16:10". finally, an image of the William Penn statue on top of Philadelphia City Hall, accompanied by the text "They knew he no longer held the grudge when they won. 4 games to 1, the Rays never stood a chance. He watched from heaven–or as close as they had gotten to it."
Beneath all of these is the pitcher's silhouette again, having just pitched the ball.

the left side of a two-page spread with a blue background labeled "history." a white-bordered warped screenshot of the wikipedia page for the world series shows the 1994 and 1995 world series, among others. beneath it, the silhouette of a pitcher is partway through his momentum after tossing a ball. next to him is text which reads

"In August of 1994, the longest work stoppage in MLB history begins. It extends through both the postseason and the World Series, making it the first time since 1904 that the World Series is not played.
In October of 1995, the Atlanta Braves (today named the Atlanta Braves), play against the Cleveland Indians (today named the Cleveland Guardians), in the World Series.
Baseball is America’s Favorite Pastime, a status it reflects in its relationships to both labor and race."

the right side of the history spread. a white silhouette of a batter about to hit a fast moving ball is in the bottom right corner, beneath text which reads
"When I was around 11, my mother and I won tickets to a Seattle Mariners game. I dont remember who they were playing aginst. I dont remember who won, though Im pretty sure the Mariners lost. This would be in character for them. My mother and I did not stay for the whole game. We ate garlic fries. They were good, but not as good as whatever the ludicrous price they they were charging for them might suggest.
I haven’t watched any baseball games since, not live, not on television. In fact, I find the game terribly boring. It goes on too long, I dont fullly understand it, it’s just... not very interesting to watch.
Conceptually, though, I love it. I think it is one of the worst, most interesting games ever invented."
