It's a game of chicken. He's figuring that if he can lie low for a few weeks, Trump will get distracted by something else.

Also:
- bought/given secondhand;
- bought before a financial crisis;
- bought in installments.
Still practical necessities, still nobody else's business.

Also hilarious to see flabby choad Elon Mush imagining himself as a "hard man."

I had an uncle with dementia who sounded like this. His rants were a mix of things he half-heard on Fox, stuff his buddies told him, and what he just made up. But he'd obsess about them and swear they were true.

Now the student editors can confidently give the administration a big middle finger, but it took close to 30 years to pull off.

My college paper, The Herald at Western KY. U., had a great faculty adviser and business manager who saw this happening elsewhere. So they tightened belts and gathered donations for decades until the paper could get its own off-campus building and own all its equipment.

This is the fifth-grader trying to bullshit his way through the book report he didn't do.

I'm thinking of a small town near where I used to live. It had a nice ecosystem of all-local shops and restaurants. Then a few big chains moved in by the interstate, culminating in a Buc-ee's; and every one of the local places died. Now the former owners work for the big corps, not themselves.

"Yeah, see, we were just restoring order at your neighbor's house, and we got half a truckload of order left over. We can't take it back to the depot, so we'll give you a special deal - we can spread order on your lawn for only $999.95. That's a bargain!"

Must be a pretty slow burn, considering that Portland's still there after years of it.

I can't be too mad at them this soon. These people have families to support. I expect most of them are keeping their heads down for a few more paychecks, long enough to find another job.
Now, if there's not an exodus over the next few months, that's a different story.

Mention anything from outside that bubble and you either get a blank stare or "But Obama/Hillary/Biden (something totally made up)."

This is quite true. I have a lot of rural/small-town relatives whose only news sources are:
- Fox and wingnut talk radio;
- People exactly like themselves, who also only get Fox/talk radio; and
- Fundie preachers whose sermons are all whatever was on Fox/talk radio last night.

Some of them, sure. But most are just ... desperate. Desperate enough to believe. Old and sick, can't afford care, prayer didn't work, so they turn to a new faith. And Donald is its for-profit prophet.

Had a fundienut uncle whose variant was that God made fake fossils to fool the wicked. As a teenager I asked him if this meant God was lying to us. He just made angry noises until lunchtime.
