Thirty-eight of 43 experts cut last month from the boards that review the science and research that happens in laboratories at the National Institutes of Health are female, Black or Hispanic, according to an analysis by the chairs of a dozen of the boards.

Let me put this as clearly as I can. The Trump administration just instantly cut NIH funding for research on things like cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, infectious disease, and all the rest, by 40-60%, depending on the university.

For those asking how unusual it is for NIH review panels to be cancelled: I do not recall study sections ever being cancelled during my 30-year career except for during the “sequestration” period around 2012-2013 when there was, I think, a government shutdown.

You can’t have public health without the public. The US public is currently being inundated by well-funded mis- and disinformation efforts on social media. The amplification of these false messages undermines science and public health, and it’s about to get a lot worse.
