2/3 Today is Labour Day (yes, the real one, not the September BBQ edition). On May 1st, 1886, 400,000 workers in Chicago went on strike for the eight-hour workday. The peaceful protest turned tragic with the Haymarket Affair, but it sparked a global movement for workers’ rights.

Or maybe, just maybe, the Pope’s last miracle: forcing the world’s most stubborn egos to sit down and talk peace, if only because the alternative was sitting in awkward silence in front of 250,000 mourners and a few billion streaming Catholics.

So, what do we call this? Divine intervention? Political theater with better acoustics?

Zelensky, too, dropped the war-room scowl and looked like a man who’d remembered what hope feels like.

And let’s talk about Trump. The man who usually treats diplomacy like a reality show elimination suddenly looked…different. Maybe it was the marble, maybe it was the incense, maybe it was the ghost of Francis giving him side-eye from the casket, but for a moment, he seemed almost presidential.

Yet here we are: Trump and Zelensky, knees almost touching, whispering in the Vatican while the world waits for Pope Francis’s funeral to begin. The irony? The only place world leaders ever really listen to each other is where everyone else is supposed to keep silent.

Let’s be honest: if someone had told me that the most promising peace talks for Ukraine would happen not at the G7, not at the UN, but in the middle of St. Peter’s Basilica, I would have asked if they’d had too much communion wine. 🧵
