No worries, and that’s a fair stance to have. Technology has done a lot of damage over the past decade. I do think generative AI’s rollout in education will need to be monitored closely, the greatest asset any of us have is our mind.

I agree we shouldn’t walk into anymore situations blind to the potential downfalls of a new technology.

We don’t, standardized testing was supposed to be that, but I think everyone can admit that, that experiment didn’t go as planned. Our current discussion about what makes education great would be exactly what I’d like to see more of. I also share your belief that AI isn’t a magic bullet.

I think saying come back to me when you learn “X, Y, and Z” is incredibly dismissive. Part of the reasons some students have appreciated these tools is because they can ask questions (sometimes foolish ones) without judgement.

I’m not following what you’re saying here and I’m trying to have a light hearted conversation around a field that hasn’t fully taken shape yet.

It’s early days, but I’m hopeful these platforms usher in a more rich educational experience that see future kids do amazing stuff.

Yeah I think retention & a true understanding of topics (not just memorization of facts by individuals) would be great benchmarks to validate the power of these tools. I think it could also spur meaningful convos about raising the quality of education for all students (especially in public schools).

Why would a person use learning mode if they just wanted an answer? Wouldn’t a person’s desire for an immediate answer defeat the point of them opting for this mode in the first place, negating the need for prompt injection? Or were you thinking of some other driving factor here?

I agree that without some one to validate your understanding of materials any self learning approach is likely to fall short, but I don’t think that’s what these systems are attempting to do.

As an exercise of just speaking through this topic isn’t the thinking with these tools that they would augment classroom learning, not be used in place of human driven instruction.

An understanding of pre-requisite knowledge is a good call out. Systems that can help you stack knowledge would be a great step. I admittedly don’t know what Maxwell’s equation is, but if an 8th grader asked and knew what that meant it could be cool to have digital aids that encouraged curiosity.

Please share more about this point of view or cover it in your next blog. I’ve been thinking that now is the best time ever to get into programming because there’s so much potential to create, but again I’d be interested to hear what’s motivating your POV as I’m still really new to this space.

I’d be interested in hearing additional thoughts on this topic as someone that’s eager to learn Swift. It be cool to know that having web dev and swift knowledge would be enough for me to create new browser and native (iOS+Android) digital experiences.

Perplexity’s products are powered by a wide range of models (like Sonnet and GPT4.1) but they do have their own Sonar model which is Llama and Deepseek based.

Additionally the targeted nature of the bulk of Perplexity’s offerings around Knowledge Acquisition seems to be in line with Apple’s desire to provide tools individuals can use to create still greater work.

I think the Perplexity acquisition seems interesting as that company has continuously been focused on use cases around knowledge acquisition and their upcoming browser product Comet, could be just the sort of fresh thinking the Safari team needs to breathe new life into Apple’s browser.

If models have been discribed by Altman and Satya as an un-defendable layer due to things like distillation. Why should Apple put their emphasis on the next great model instead of the next great AI enabled product, which is where Sam again has shared the real gains will be had?

It’s truly amazing what is now available for creation and expression on the web via vanilla CSS.
