I lost out on a lot of life because I was raised with a closed mind and an unshakeable confidence that I was right and everyone outside my moral framework was a lost soul. It makes me deeply sad that there are millions of people who will never break out of that horrible shell.

As I got older, I could not shut those feelings out. I had to bathe in the dissonance every day as my values cost me friendships and experiences. When you’re made to examine yourself daily, change is inevitable. When you’re not constantly challenged, you can be comfortable in your wrongness.

When I was a conservative teenager, every time I started breaking out of my info bubble, I was drenched in a cocktail of anxiety, shame, and guilt at the notion I may be wrong and my attitude could be hurting people.

Every single one of them knows. My mom and dad know. They are powerless against the cognitive dissonance that’s been programmed into them since the 70s. That’s a moral failure on their part, but a human one.

I resent them; I HATE Rupert Murdoch.

They KNOW the wealth disparity is bad. They KNOW you can’t cut taxes and expect the deficit to improve. They KNOW the middle class is dying and blue collar workers are getting boned.

But their brains have been so rotted by decades of Limbaugh and Hannity that they can’t/won’t act on that knowledge.

Here’s the thing about *most* suburban conservatives: you can get them to follow this line of thinking right up to linking it to conservative economic policy. Try to bridge that final gap, and the Fox News script in their head starts running.
