It’s about the programme itself. It’s about a standard system that has failed MANY for years. It’s not phonics - it’s the phonics programme. It’s not the children - it’s the programme. It’s not the staff - it’s the PROGRAMME.

This baffles me as a DfE phonics provider. Why would you use anything that requires SO many ‘sticky plasters’? Why wouldn’t we realise the need for endless ‘catch up’ reflects the flaws in a PROGRAMME V the children? Perhaps leaders believe it reflects how well staff are delivering the programme?

Ive delivered a lot of training on supporting and scaffolding the teaching of phonics this year. Schools keep reporting the same problems:

1. Their ‘chosen’ phonics programme (usually one of 2) requires endless, unsustainable intervention.
2. Said endless ‘catch up’ is turning children OFF.
