New Year
By Zeina Hashem Beck
Tell me about it, the year.
The year you almost shattered your shoulder. The year you spilled all that past & red wine on the kitchen floor. You sang in alleys, in cars, in nightmares where you looked for your love in dark clubs & shouted the wrong name. Tell me about the year. June gorged with afternoons & conversation.
January of chance. March of laughter.
July of bombs. Tell me how you refreshed the news every hour & couldn't keep up with October, with the dead who outgrew the living, how you lost your mind & met deadlines, how you marched or did not march,

Extremely moving memorial video for Gaza Soup Kitchen’s beloved Chef Mahmoud, assassinated by Israel as he was headed to north Gaza's Kamal Adwan Hospital.

β€œWith the grace of God I’ll continue this work. I swear what I wish from the bottom of my heart is to feed the entire north.”

Grateful to have this new poem in the new issue of @thebeliever.net with thanks to habibi Fady Joudah whose book has helped get me through this past year, & to @sallywenmao.bsky.social for the support β€οΈπŸ™πŸ‰

I just received this.

Haunting, powerful and heartbreaking words. I can’t wait to dive in and hear the poets at the reading next Monday.

Free Palestine.

Eternal starlight to Maya Marshall & the lovely folks at Haymarket for supporting me (& many of us) through one of the darkest moments in our history. Thank you to every writer unafraid to an accomplice in our struggle, for re/orienting me every day: I write for you.

04.12.2024 23:27 β€” πŸ‘ 11    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 2    πŸ“Œ 0

My third is to my MFA folks who loved me through the impossible process of writing this book, especially to @tarikd.xyz, without whom this book literally wouldn't exist, as well as my NU profs/cohort & broader chicago community.

04.12.2024 23:26 β€” πŸ‘ 11    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

My second is to celestial comrade Etel Adnan, with whom my book shares spectral siblinghood: may the job of Arab American poets be one of carrying our ancestors' names into the night as we join them, with all that love asks of us.

04.12.2024 23:25 β€” πŸ‘ 4    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

My first & truest gratitude is to my people who resist by any means necessary. No ifs ands or buts. You are braver than any poet of empire can ever dream of being.

04.12.2024 23:25 β€” πŸ‘ 5    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

That I will donate proceeds from this book to Gaza is not enough. That I will continue to reshare & redonate to mutual aid in the region is not enough. By publishing this, I am reflecting the responsibility onto you, reader, asking you to join us & build a new world together

04.12.2024 23:25 β€” πŸ‘ 5    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Let me be clear: by bringing this book into the world, I want to bring nothing short of apocalypse, by which I mean, an end to the spiraling death machine of empire that rules over us all. No words of mine can ever be enough, to our kin in Gaza, without our actions to end this genocide.

04.12.2024 23:25 β€” πŸ‘ 6    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Maybe that's the contradiction of when the Arab Apocalypse comes to America: it was here all along, but how many of us knew how to digest it, let alone, participate in it?

04.12.2024 23:24 β€” πŸ‘ 5    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

This book is not enough. I want to start from that place. That poetry as survival is not enough because survival is not enough. That poetry teaching life is not enough when the il/literate entities that murder us are fundamentally antithetical to life.

Some news, with a heavy heart and gratitude for the people who fight to keep Palestinians alive, despite. My next poetry collection, WHEN THE ARAB APOCALYPSE COMES TO AMERICA will be published by @haymarketbooks.org in 2026.

NPR also edited out the many times NBA poetry award finalists Lena Khalaf Tuffaha and Fady Joudah very intentionally used the word "genocide" in their interviews.

As @intifadabatata.bsky.social notes, Palestinian permission to narrate remains "nonmetaphorical."

BREAKING: Autonomous anti-genocide activists bring the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade to a grinding halt after blockading the McDonald’s float for a second year in a row.

β€œThose grinches who thinks they can disrupt the parade: it’s not going to happen,” Mayor Eric Adams said yesterday.

β€œThe nonmetaphorical nature of our permission to narrate can be seen in the details of the post-National Book Award Nomination trajectory for both poets, with NPR censoring words such as β€˜genocide’ in their coverage.”

I truly hope more folks will give critical attention to both poets' larger bodies of work. You'd be devastatingly unsurprised at how not even an NBA nomination/win will change just how indigestible Palestinian poets are to the US critical landscape. More lit crit BY and FOR us!
