I knew in my bones, seeing his so starkly, something was missing in him. He seemed further away and yet became closer to me. Years of caregiving and worry further hardened me toward the world, yet made me grateful for every moment with him.
My world, my partner, my comrade, my love, our life.

I saw him waste away before me and in vain hoped the doctors would take a second look.

And I’m still stuck in a groove of those hours leading up to his death. Why him, why now, why after such a succession of recent triumphs? He had vision these last months through his verse. It came through every line I see:

To grieve without projection. This is my work to do. To allow anger to flow through at the abruptness of his departure. The doctors who did not pursue his heart issues. To defy cancer only to succumb to something likely preventable.

This illustration + L’s poem was created by his friend and co-conspirator, a local artist Adam Reich. We chatted for a long while about how this poem was deeply symbolic of the fleeting nature of life, his sudden departure. It hit so deeply.

He turned to me at one point—after he popped into a local shop to buy a new hat (hats were his jam) and he purchased a fine looking brown Stetson made in Mexico—and said “I’m having a really good day.”

The last poem L posted online was about our quick trip to Ottawa. He had a good time, as he had never been (I showed him The Glebe, where my aunt lives, and Parliament Hill). It was an unusually warm and sunny February day.
