Compilation of pics of games I ran yesterday
Great day running some games at Chesptow Castle yesterday as part of their 'Let's Discover...' series. The William Marshal tournament game (a stripped back verison of Γcorcheurs!) was by far the most popular, enjoyed by young...and not so young... alike. #medievalwargaming #wargaming #museums

A great day on Saturday, at BaronsWar, the show organised as part of the Battle of Evesham event.
Used Γcorcheurs to run a game based on Richard of Cornwall's capture after Lewes in 1264. Great fun games, & lovely to chat to interested gamers old & new!

Six 26mm knights, mostly painted.
More progress ahead of Saturday's game. Richard of Cornwall, his son (sporting what I have suddenly realised looks like a mumu with its floral pattern...), and several men connected with the Cornish earldom.

It's tricky as there isn't a single study of medieval heraldry, & a lot of the work on heraldry is antiquarian, making assumptions that modern (read 16th & 17th century) rules applied right through the period.
I wrote a chapter for 'A Companion to Chivalry'. DM me & we can chat further.

What a great source! I have to admit my knowledge of medieval Prussian/Teutonic/ central & Eastern European heraldry is weak, but I do know that it varies quite a bit from the Anglo-French form. It's also true that, in the middle ages, the 'rules' of heraldry were very much just guidelines.

They're nice. If I maynmakenone comment, generally animals will always face the pole, no matter which side of the flag they are on (which runs counter to the chivalric rule that they always face to the right).

Well, assuming Γcorcheurs! Sells well when it comes out (it is on it's way, folks, I have been promised!) then, yes.
My intention is to do a booklet for the Wars of the Roses, with more suggested Retinues, some extra rules, new Traits, and scenarios including a First St Albans mini campaign.

But @lordraglan.bsky.social had some Welsh on his side, and was therefore invincible.

Great game with @lordraglan.bsky.social earlier this week playing @mogsymakes.bsky.social Midgard rules.
A thoroughly enjoyable game, even if (as usual) I lost.

Thank you, Andrew. Some of the rationale behind them is most certainly based on your scholarship.
Funnily enough, I've been thinking about doing that, at other's prompting, for a little while; and with no major academic project on the horizon... well, we shall see.

Try this as a basis: Place them above Serjans in the Bouvines variant. Movement is 6", 2 Dice Shooting and 3 Dice in melee. Special Rules: may shoot from front or rear face.
That should give you enough to use the shoot and scoot tactics without imbalancing the game.
If it works, let me know!

They weren't written for that theatre, but the underlying mechanisms are broad enough that it should work.
I would argue that you shouldn't adapt the rules. Instead it's what statistics you give the new troop type, and then whether you use the appropriate tactic.
