Although religious freedom protections initially preserved shechita until the 1930s, the Nazi regime banned the practice in 1933. After the war, the Allied governments restored its legal status, yet opposition reemerged during the 1950s and has persisted in various forms.

Shechita, the Jewish method of ritual slaughter, has faced opposition in Germany since the late 19th century. Animal protection societies have long campaigned against the practice, denouncing it as both a βcultural disgraceβ and an example of βJewish cruelty to animalsβ.
