London Loop - Capital Ring

The #GreenChainWalk is a very different kind of beast, but very lovely too!

Crystal Palace to Wimbledon via Streatham today, and that's the #CapitalRing finished, a year and three weeks after I first started the #LondonLoop. The latter definitely the better of the two. Not sure what's next, but it'd better involve a lot more pubs.

I was pleased to get this @gojauntly.bsky.social notification the other day when I hit the 250k mark in the Walk 2026k in 2026 Challenge #LondonLoop

Hah, knowing the people who developed it back in the day… i wonder if their favourite pubs have just shut in the last 25 years!?

The walk was designed to link and connect parks and green spaces rather than take the shortest route - when you show it like that it does look a bit odd though! And of course nobody has ever walked down Leonard Road so we will never know…

A lovely wintry ramble around Section 3 of the @ldnloop-capring.bsky.social today and not nearly as muddy as I’d feared. The route is a mix of gorgeous villages I’ll never afford to live in and some stunning woodlands made this an afternoon well spent.

Oh isn’t it - they’re beautiful things and all about 25 years old now and looking the worse for wear - and sadly as volunteers we’re rather struggling to know what to do about it…

A fair chunk of both #CapitalRing section 14 and the DLR seem to be closed, and the detours have turned more into a Hammers-themed one-man pub crawl than anything else. So, all in all, a resounding success.

Our project coordinators met up last night to talk project progress & next steps - and I was particularly struck by the staggering 637,480 hits we’ve had to our #CapitalRing route guidance web pages since we redrafted all the instructions and redid the maps. That’s a lot of walking, London!!!🚶 🚶‍♀️ 🚶‍♂️

Also, please do get in touch if you come across hazards you think other walkers would benefit from knowing about. Our section volunteers walks their sections regularly but not relentlessly week in week out!

A field with green grass and scraggy lavender, not at all in bloom and a lovely... er, lavender colour. There is a barren tree in the middle of the field, and a row of trees in the distance. There are no people visible.

Went to the Mayfield Lavender Field (so fieldy the named it twice!)

Surprised at the lack of Instagrammers and Tiktokers out today. I heard they love this place.

Love that section! And nice day for it too!

I completed the LOOP with a work colleague when I retired - one section a month. I did get a sense of achievement when completed. Since then I have only cherry-picked parts of the route.

When we started our project to update all the route guidance (and improve the waymarking etc) we had quite the debate about whether to go with the 15 or the 24!
