Beyoncé’s “Texas Hold ‘Em” and Cowboy Carter album marked a turning point, giving a boost to Black country artists such as Tanner Adell, Reyna Roberts and Rhiannon Giddens. This spotlight has helped shift industry perceptions and challenged the narrow walls that have excluded Black creators. /end

A few African American artists, such as Ray Charles, have crossed over from other genres. Charley Pride overcame racial barriers to become a major-label Black country star in the mid-20th century. Kane Brown has consistently charted hits, blending pop and R&B influences with modern country. /7

Radio stations dictate who will be successful, a problem that isn’t limited to country music. Format radio pigeonholes Black artists by catering to the audience their advertisers want to target. Country music is marketed primarily to white people. Artists like Beyoncé don’t fit the mold. /6

Country music became a marketing category in the 1920s and was viewed as white, Southern music. The Black artists who helped shape country music were shut out of the genre. When format radio emerged as a marketing technique in the 1950s, the segregation of the music industry was solidified. /5

Despite this legacy, Black artists get scant airplay on country music stations. The music industry historically segregated Black and white artists through “race record” labels and discriminatory marketing, often omitting Black contributions while white performers gained mainstream popularity. /4

Lesley Riddle traveled with A.P. Carter to collect folk songs and co-develop the “Carter scratch” guitar style. “Tee-Tot” Payne mentored Hank Williams, and Arnold Shultz influenced bluegrass pioneer Bill Monroe. Harmonica virtuoso DeFord Bailey was the first Black star of the Grand Ole Opry. /3

African Americans are foundational to country music. Their contributions begin with the banjo, which is a direct descendant of a West African instrument, the Akonting. Enslaved people integrated African musical traditions, including spirituals and field songs, into early “stringband” music. /2
