This paper is getting attention for suggesting ecosystem restoration won't help with mitigation, but restoration is still *critical* for adaptation.

Restoring coastal wetlands helps reduce risks from sea level rise and hurricanes, restoring urban forests helps reduce risks from extreme heat, etc...

Great study and a pity that articles like this are so rare. It shows an approach considered promising thus far - one of *the* major approaches for carbon sequestration - does not deliver as anticipated. It debunks without giving an alternative solution. Very important insight - difficult to publish?

We should come to terms with the fact that forest, shrubland, grassland, and wetland ecosystems cannot offset fossil fuel CO₂ emissions.

But we should still protect and restore them for biodiversity and other ecosystem benefits.
