We officially hit 100” of snow today (2/12), which is something that’s only happened 3 other times in recorded history, none of them during the 20 years we’ve lived here. This winter has been SO unrelenting!

Yet another snowy morning drive into campus followed by 1k trudge from parking lot to office. I'm pretty sure that more of my on-campus days have been like this than not, and by a fairly big margin. This winter is really just grinding me down...and we're still not even halfway through February yet.

(For the record, I had also set the curve in this geometry teacher's classes as a middle-schooler getting bussed over to the HS for a class two grade levels ahead...but apparently whatever math aptitude I had was just going to evaporate upon reaching calculus?)

My HS geometry teacher advised my dad against me taking Calculus at the local university as a PSEO student because "in his experience, girls just don't have the right kind of mind for calculus".

Thankfully my dad and I are stubborn as hell, and I set the curve in that class, fueled mostly by spite.

(And: I wasn't even "bad" at math...I was 2 years ahead of my grade! But my 1-year younger brother was like, a math genius, so I got a weird amount of the "bad at math = lesser human" rhetoric despite actually being good at math, because I was even better at language stuff than math stuff?)

OMG, this. I know my dad meant well, but his version of feminism was "you can do anything the boys do, and thus doing "girl" things is below you" and that was...not great.

This is by design. They know (or at least people like Miller know) that if they crank the violence up to 11, most of the public will stop caring--and maybe even praise them--when they dial it back to a 10.

We get similar emails here and yeah, it's...deranged.

still cold. still silly. Why yes, I did knit a Melt the ICE hat for Sven Scandinavian...and it really does suit him! (And yes, Sven wants ICE OUT!) I cast on the same number of stitches as called for in the Sven pattern's hat, and then basically did the Melt the ICE pattern, adjusting the height of the ribbing to make sense for a doll that has no ears.

Please don't accuse people in knitted hats of only wearing their supposed politics if all you're doing is posting, which is basically just another way of wearing your politics. It's a silly thing to attack people over in any case. Using fashion to signal support for ongoing acts of rebellion is good

I say this regularly. People use performative as a substitute for 'inauthentic' and we could all just say the words we mean to say. Erving Goffman helps us to understand that we perform all of the time in real life. Life itself is often a performance of self.

5. How do you know that the only thing these “liberals” are doing is knitting hats? Because I see these hats on school pickup duty, on neighborhood patrols, at grocery drop offs.

It’s more than disappointing to see people mocking the red knit hats.

An exciting milestone: kiddo and I just played through the whole first movement of the Bach Double without needing to stop and regroup at any point!! As soon as we released the last note we both squealed “WE DID IT!!” with huge grins on our faces.

A decade in the making, but we’re finally here!

Outside, it’s like the days where I say “the air is made of water”…very fine dense mist, except that it’s 0 degrees outside (windchill -22F) so it’s FROZEN fine dense mist. The air is made of ice?

It’s really pretty, but I think I’m gonna stay indoors today.

It needs to stop being arctic temperatures and constant snow!! (We’ve had 23 straight days with at least a trace of snow, which means at least having to clear snow off the car, if not clearing the whole driveway, every single day!)

Yeah, it sucks but better to catch it early so I can take it easy before I crash even harder! (Our recent weather has been conspiring to make taking it easy a difficult prospect, alas.)

Haven’t dealt with one of these in awhile but I know rest is best, so I’m gonna try to take things easy (and maybe watch the Opalite video a bunch more times, ha!)

Realized today that that I’m almost certainly in the early days of a fibromyalgia flare up. The specific sort of pain, the messed up sleep, the foggy brain, the fatigue (my students noticed the latter two of these with kind concern yesterday)…it’s a pattern.

My piano teacher told me today that she loves working with me because even when I’m struggling to coordinate my hands, I have good musical intuitions and really am trying to make music instead of just banging out notes.

Watched the new Taylor Swift music video (for Opalite) with the kiddo. I love dorky silly weirdo Taylor so so much, and I love thinking through all the visual/conceptual metaphors and links to past work, and also I am an Elder Millennial, so this video is sheer delight for me.

"We can't fix the Dems, we need a new viable third party" is the political equivalent of "we can't fix Earth's environment, let's colonize Mars"

In that however hard the first one might be - maybe very! - the second one is orders of magnitude harder
