16/17 of my AP Spanish Literature students passed their exam with a 3 or higher this year! I’m so proud, especially of my sophomores who took the hardest Spanish class we offer a full year early!

A student in the school I teach at today did the stupid TikTok trend of sticking a pencil into a laptop until it caught fire. Whole building evacuated, fire trucks, the whole nine yards. Luckily no one was hurt but it is yet further proof of how today’s kids are out of control.

One of my sophomore students today informed me of something of great importance. He felt the need to tell me that no one likes me and then storm out of my class. Gotta love teenagers. 🙄

I’ve always loved Wicked the musical and now having seen it in theaters, I was truly blown away. The themes feel as timely as ever and every extra moment that wasn’t in the stage version felt so great. It was long but I don’t think that is a problem. Just wow!

I literally had this discussion with my mom earlier this week. When I was trying to make a comparison to common works of literature in English (I actually teach literature in Spanish to Spanish-speaking students), they told me they’d never had to read a whole book for class! I was floored.

It’s been my goal to give interesting stories and texts that are slightly above their current reading levels while addressing that many of them don’t understand how language works. I’m hoping by teaching the logic of language, maybe they’ll gain some resilience when encountering unknown words.

As a high school teacher, I hear you. We are seeing the same. Asking students to read more than two pages at a time causes many of them to simply refuse to even attempt it. I teach 9th and 11th grade and by 9th grade, somehow all love of reading and academic curiosity has been stamped out of them.

To any AP teachers on here: My students this year are struggling more than ever with the idea of a timed essay. How do you help them deal with the limits on how long they have to write an essay with all of the necessary content?

That is exactly how I’m looking at it. I’m still sad but couldn’t have asked for a better cat.
