Elisa found that respiration rates scale as the product of organic carbon and microbial biomass, with minimal effects of microbial diversity. This is a cool result, supporting the use of nonlinear kinetics to interpret data at small scales (lab incubation). Great @holisoils.bsky.social team effort!

Yesterday afternoon at @esmmicrobes.bsky.social, Bartosz Adamczyk from @luke.fi and a contributor to the #Holisoils project, presented exciting new tools and perspectives to better understand microbe-SOM interactions!

- Thinning had limited impact on microbial diversity & helped preserve soil functioning.
- Changes in fungal & plant community composition were observed after interventions.

This info is key to design #ForestManagement strategies to maintain productivity & ecological balance!

The study was conducted at the Ränskälänkorpi test site in Finland, aiming to evaluate if thinning (as an alternative to clear-cutting) might reduce the disturbance to soil diversity.

🔍 Main hypothesis: Thinning would have a lower impact on soil microbial diversity compared to clear-cutting.

📊 The results revealed that nitrogen fertilization:
(1) enhanced forest productivity through an increase in microbial residues & #SoilCarbon pool,
(2) changed trees’ secondary metabolism.

These findings bring insights into #ForestSoil dynamics & the role of nitrogen in ecosystem processes!
