A letter to the editor published in The Globe and Mail from Elizabeth May, MP for Saanich-Gulf Islands and Leader of the Green Party of Canada. The letter critiques Justin Trudeau's broken 2015 promise to end first-past-the-post (FPTP) voting and highlights the findings of the 2016 all-party parliamentary committee, which recommended proportional representation. May states that Canadians overwhelmingly called for fair voting, and previous studies, including one from 1921, found that FPTP does not work in Canada's multiparty democracy. She concludes that FPTP benefits big parties while promoting divisive politics.
Trudeau promised electoral reform. Canadians demanded it. A parliamentary committee recommended it.
Yet, here we are.
Elizabeth May's response to the Globe and Mail reminds us why we still need proportional representation.
Trump's threats to punish our jobs and our communities are designed to turn people against each other and extract concessions that nobody wants. The only way to deal with a bully is to unite and face him with the power of true solidarity.
