What does the Ng'ipalajem team do?

Ng’ipalajem, meaning Ancestors in Turkana, is an ERC-funded project.

Led by @martamlahr.bsky.social, the project investigates how the emergence of Homo sapiens is deeply intertwined with Africa’s long-term environmental and ecological history.

My left hand holding a light brown quartzite cobble with a dusty, sandy soil and sparse grass behind. The cobble has several reddish stains, each roughly the size of a small fingerprint, dotted around its surface.

Re: Neanderthal fingerprints, it's time again for this.

I found this quartzite cobble with mysterious red spots* in NE Brazil in 2013. There are clear finger-whorls. What was the maker symbolising?

*they're blood prints from a wild capuchin, who injured her finger using the stone to open nuts 🧪🏺🐒🎨

Good to be back at Mitoc-Malu Galben in northeastern Romania with Cristina Cordoș, Anaïs Vignoles and Samuel Kasemann. We are working in the middle of the 12m long sequence in levels dated to ~28-21 kya. Great archaeology, stunning landscape and wonderful people!
