discovering the absolute wondrous joy of my work existing and being discussed beyond me (a post from a stranger came up on my feed on upcoming books they're excited about, and mine was in it!)

Years after two Ethiopian writersโ lives diverge, one comes back to take back what she feels was rightfully hers.

They'd been the same girls, two Ethiopian friends w/ dreams of becoming writers. It all changes when one goes viral & becomes publishing's new darling, leaving behind the other in the town they'd vowed to escape.
Years later, she decides to bring her down & take her life.

11.01.2025 14:44 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0It's still a skill I wish I had in my repertoire, but the learning curve is so steep that I've kind of given up. For me it's been better to focus on lotion and sunscreen. Not sure across different generations, and it might just be my friends, but everyday makeup isn't actually too common among us
08.01.2025 20:48 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0I always thought I would figure it out for the big occasions in my life (graduations, bdays, vacations) but the most I've managed is lipgloss and mascara, or v rarely, eyeliner. The one time a friend put a full beat on me, it looked textured and odd, plus was a pain to get off.

9. Querying: R/PUBTIPS
reddit.com/r/PubTips/
A wonderful community of writers, authors, and publishing professionals offering free advice and spot-on critiques. (this is actually how I got an offer of agent rep!)
8. Drafting & Revising: SCRIVNER
literatureandlatte.com/scrivener/do...
This is the only program on the list that has a cost - a one time time $50 fee, but it has a 30-day free trial. It's brilliant, esp for revising. Does have a bit of a learning curve tho
7. Drafting: BLANK PAGE
blank.page
I hate distractions when I write so I need my screen as clear as possible. I don't use it often now that I draft on scrivner which has a similar function! (Also, this doesn't autosave)
6. Brainstorming plot: TV TROPES
tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwik...
5. Coming up with terms relevant to your story: REVERSE DICTIONARY
reversedictionary.org
Esp helpful if you're writing a time period or genre you don't often, because it can be difficult to get into the style if you're not used to it
4. Describing characteristics: DESCRIBING WORDS
describingwords.io
I use this during revision to enliven characters and descriptions. There are only so many times you can say "warm brown eyes"
3. Settings: ATLAS OBSCURA
atlasobscura.com
Great for if you're trying to brainstorm settings or get inspiration. You just click around and it shows you different locations around the globe, images, and descriptions of the place.
2. For worldbuilding/creating 3D models of your location: VECTARY
vectary.com
If you have a hard time visualizing things, this can be really helpful. Esp if it's a complicated setting.
1. For fast drafting: MOST DANGEROUS WRITING APP
squibler.io/dangerous-wr...
You set a timer, then start writing. If you stop writing for longer than a few seconds, all your words disappear. It's chaotic and brilliant and I can scream it's so good!
9 free websites* that've helped me immensely as a writer๐งต
*these are not ads! I've used and can vouch all of them.
thank you, ry!
