I've received an 'exclusive' invite to try Nature's new 'research assistant', which will burn down a forest to provide a 'summary of the paper' I'm reading and I have SUCH exciting news for them, that's called an 'abstract' and the actual authors already wrote it for me, no forest-burning required.

Today LHCb presented a new measurement of the decay of a B meson into a K* and a μ+ μ- pair

Previous results disagreed with the Standard Model prediction for the branching fraction and angular distribution

The new measurement has almost twice as much data and still disagrees!

THREAD: Resurgence

or: How do physicists keep getting away with ignoring infinitely big things?

I wrote about this back when everyone was still on twitter. Someone asked me a question and I think it's an excellent occasion to repost the thread.

No, theoretical physics isn't broken; it's just very hard When you don't have enough clues to bring your detective story to a close, you should expect that your educated guesses will all be wrong.

No, theoretical physics isn’t broken; it’s just very hard

There are many asserting that "theoretical physics is broken," and that's why there haven't been revolutionary new advances recently.

On the other hand, maybe today's problems are just very hard.

BREAKING: The president's budget request just hit Congress, which could usher in a dark age for NASA space science.
Congress has the final say, but you can help shape the outcome by adding your name to our global petition.
This is just the start of our fight.

The attack on basic science in the USA is real:

The National Science Foundation just killed half of the Nobel prize winning LIGO experiments (essentially meaning: LIGO can no longer see where a gravitational wave comes from, just that it was there)

The Presidents Budget Request for NASA is out. It’s a bloodbath

Canceled are DAVINCI, VERITAS, Juno, OSIRIS-APEX, US participation in ExoMars and EnVision…

Huge cut to R&A. No funding to begin development of the Uranus Orbiter.

If you’ve ever cared about NASA, time to contact congress.

I just had to think about an interesting fact I learned a good week ago, which I had not realized before:
CMS will have a track trigger in the HL-LHC based on independent track pT measurements in each double-layered silicon module; but ATLAS *can't do that*.
This will be a major difference.
Why? 1/4

Neutrinos may or may not be shrinking, but this is a great new result from the KATRIN experiment: new direct upper limit on the (effective electron) neutrino mass of 0.45 eV (90% CL). This comes from precision measurements of tritium β-decays in a huge spectrometer: www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...
