This appendix caught my eye. The table shows per diem rates paid to detention facilities. The US Marshals part of the table is new.

These laws are horrific all around, and still exist in most states in some form. There are people in prison right now for the "crime" of being sick. Just an example of how the carceral state is the most violent for the most vulnerable.

Blue line is "punishment" rate: prison pop per 10K reported CRIMES.

While our rate per PERSON has fallen, our rate per (reported) CRIME? Still rising.

Here's the ugly reality of the ‘big beautiful bill’: 10 million people will be kicked off Medicaid.

This will dramatically increase incarceration rates and make communities less safe.

Meanwhile, annual average Medicaid spending per person is between $4,970 and $12,580.

It is far cheaper to care for someone than to incarcerate them.
